Violence is one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity among youth.

Physical fights

Slightly more than 1 in 3 high school students reported being in a physical fight. 3.6% of the students had been treated by a doctor or nurse for injuries sustained in a physical fight. Of these fights more than 1 in 10 (13.6%) occurred on school property.

Weapons

18.5% of high school students had carried a weapon such as a gun, knife, or club on one or more of the 30 days preceding the survey.  5.4% of high school students had carried a gun on one or more of the 30 days preceding the survey.

Weapons at school

Nationwide in 2005, 6.5% (greater than 1 in 20) of high school students had carried a weapon (e.g., a gun, knife, or club) on school property on one or more of the 30 days preceding the survey. During the previous year, 7.9% (greater than 1 in 20) of high school students nationwide in 2005 had been threatened or injured with a weapon (e.g., a gun, knife, or club) on school property one or more times.

Dating Violence

Almost 1 in 10 high school students had been hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by their girlfriend or boyfriend. 7.5% had been forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to.

Afraid to go to school

In the preceding 30 days. 6.0% of high school students had not gone to school on one or more days because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school.

Damage to student's property

Almost 1 in 3 (29.8%) of students had their property (e.g., car, clothing, or books) stolen or deliberately damaged on school property in the previous year.
